At length, by dint of mounting on each other's backs, aiding themselves with the skeleton of the staircase, climbing up the walls, clinging to the ceiling, slashing away at the very brink of the trap-door, the last one who offered resistance, a score of assailants, soldiers, National Guardsmen, municipal guardsmen, in utter confusion, the majority disfigured by wounds in the face during that redoubtable ascent, blinded by blood, furious, rendered savage, made an irruption into the apartment on the first floor. There they found only one man still on his feet, Enjolras. Without cartridges, without sword, he had nothing in his hand now but the barrel of his gun whose stock he had broken over the head of those who were entering. He had placed the billiard table between his assailants and himself; he had retreated into the corner of the room, and there, with haughty eye, and head borne high, with this stump of a weapon in his hand, he was still so alarming as to speedily create an empty space around him. A cry arose:

"He is the leader! It was he who slew the artillery-man. It is well that he has placed himself there. Let him remain there. Let us shoot him down on the spot."

"Shoot me," said Enjolras.

And flinging away his bit of gun-barrel, and folding his arms, he offered his breast.

The audacity of a fine death always affects men. As soon as Enjolras folded his arms and accepted his end, the din of strife ceased in the room, and this chaos suddenly stilled into a sort of sepulchral solemnity. The menacing majesty of Enjolras disarmed and motionless, appeared to oppress this tumult, and this young man, haughty, bloody, and charming, who alone had not a wound, who was as indifferent as an invulnerable being, seemed, by the authority of his tranquil glance, to constrain this sinister rabble to kill him respectfully. His beauty, at that moment augmented by his pride, was resplendent, and he was fresh and rosy after the fearful four and twenty hours which had just elapsed, as though he could no more be fatigued than wounded. It was of him, possibly, that a witness spoke afterwards, before the council of war: "There was an insurgent whom I heard called Apollo." A National Guardsman who had taken aim at Enjolras, lowered his gun, saying: "It seems to me that I am about to shoot a flower."

Twelve men formed into a squad in the corner opposite Enjolras, and silently made ready their guns.

Then a sergeant shouted:

"Take aim!"

An officer intervened.


And addressing Enjolras:

"Do you wish to have your eyes bandaged?"


"Was it you who killed the artillery sergeant?"


Grantaire had waked up a few moments before.

Grantaire, it will be remembered, had been asleep ever since the preceding evening in the upper room of the wine-shop, seated on a chair and leaning on the table.

He realized in its fullest sense the old metaphor of "dead drunk." The hideous potion of absinthe-porter and alcohol had thrown him into a lethargy. His table being small, and not suitable for the barricade, he had been left in possession of it. He was still in the same posture, with his breast bent over the table, his head lying flat on his arms, surrounded by glasses, beer-jugs and bottles. His was the overwhelming slumber of the torpid bear and the satiated leech. Nothing had had any effect upon it, neither the fusillade, nor the cannon-balls, nor the grape-shot which had made its way through the window into the room where he was. Nor the tremendous uproar of the assault. He merely replied to the cannonade, now and then, by a snore. He seemed to be waiting there for a bullet which should spare him the trouble of waking. Many corpses were strewn around him; and, at the first glance, there was nothing to distinguish him from those profound sleepers of death.

Noise does not rouse a drunken man; silence awakens him. The fall of everything around him only augmented Grantaire's prostration; the crumbling of all things was his lullaby. The sort of halt which the tumult underwent in the presence of Enjolras was a shock to this heavy slumber. It had the effect of a carriage going at full speed, which suddenly comes to a dead stop. The persons dozing within it wake up. Grantaire rose to his feet with a start, stretched out his arms, rubbed his eyes, stared, yawned, and understood.

A fit of drunkenness reaching its end resembles a curtain which is torn away. One beholds, at a single glance and as a whole, all that it has concealed. All suddenly presents itself to the memory; and the drunkard who has known nothing of what has been taking place during the last twenty-four hours, has no sooner opened his eyes than he is perfectly informed. Ideas recur to him with abrupt lucidity; the obliteration of intoxication, a sort of steam which has obscured the brain, is dissipated, and makes way for the clear and sharply outlined importunity of realities.

Relegated, as he was, to one corner, and sheltered behind the billiard-table, the soldiers whose eyes were fixed on Enjolras, had not even noticed Grantaire, and the sergeant was preparing to repeat his order: "Take aim!" when all at once, they heard a strong voice shout beside them:

"Long live the Republic! I'm one of them."

Grantaire had risen. The immense gleam of the whole combat which he had missed, and in which he had had no part, appeared in the brilliant glance of the transfigured drunken man.

He repeated: "Long live the Republic!" crossed the room with a firm stride and placed himself in front of the guns beside Enjolras.

"Finish both of us at one blow," said he.

And turning gently to Enjolras, he said to him:

"Do you permit it?"

Enjolras pressed his hand with a smile.

This smile was not ended when the report resounded.

Enjolras, pierced by eight bullets, remained leaning against the wall, as though the balls had nailed him there. Only, his head was bowed.

Grantaire fell at his feet, as though struck by a thunderbolt.

A few moments later, the soldiers dislodged the last remaining insurgents, who had taken refuge at the top of the house. They fired into the attic through a wooden lattice. They fought under the very roof. They flung bodies, some of them still alive, out through the windows. Two light-infantrymen, who tried to lift the shattered omnibus, were slain by two shots fired from the attic. A man in a blouse was flung down from it, with a bayonet wound in the abdomen, and breathed his last on the ground. A soldier and an insurgent slipped together on the sloping slates of the roof, and, as they would not release each other, they fell, clasped in a ferocious embrace. A similar conflict went on in the cellar. Shouts, shots, a fierce trampling. Then silence. The barricade was captured.

The soldiers began to search the houses round about, and to pursue the fugitives.


Seeing the movie again tomorrow but one of the best aspects was the small bits of focus given to the book canon, such as all the Enjolras/Grantaire stuff. And the actor playing Grantaire is so fucking obsessed with it that his twitter is my new favourite thing.

A couple of people asked what I wrote/said in my application for Hypable, so w/e, here:

First stage (written):

Loving this show is like an abusive relationship. I always want to break up with it but never can, it keeps winning me back. It is so problematic - SO problematic, it has some really major issues both behind the scenes and onscreen - but I will never give it up because the reason that I care about these issues is because I'm so invested. I've been there since close to the start and been watching the fandom since then as well, I know all the news, all the dramas, all the actors and all the canon of the show. I think I would make a good addition to a Glee podcast because even though I rant about it, and sometimes things that happen make me want to shake Ryan Murphy by the shoulders for being a petty child or making things up as he goes along - I deeply love it and appreciate what it has done, how it's bigger than the sum of its parts - how it has reached so many people whom may have not ever been exposed to these ideas and tolerance. It's also done such an amazing job with characters, creating real traits that make you want to know more, about such a large cast. I love all the cast as well, all the actors. So basically I would be a voice that can look objectively and be critical of this show's issues, but never hateful because of how much true love and loyalty I have for it. I'm also a huge and old Starkid fan so know how that whole world crosses over, including what goes on in the fandom. Also, I am Australian and have a funny voice.

My favorite characters are Santana, Blaine, Puck and Rachel. Santana and Puck, I think, have had the best and most realistic development over the course of the show - I have loved seeing them becoming exposed and becoming loyal to ND. Santana particularly, I think Brad is playing a real long game with her story and I think it's the best. Rachel is sometimes my ultimate favorite but it depends who's writing - Ian really backpedals her character and makes her awful and unsympathetic for humor value, and it's not fair because she has had extraordinary growth and healing, and he regresses her. As a great Tweet I saw once said "I hear Glee's written by a team of 3 people. I'd love if one day they could meet each other!" - sometimes I very much agree with that. However, I am very excited for season 3, especially with the new writers and the idea of actually having a proper team and a long story arc and Marti Noxon, who knows how to run a show... I have high hopes.

Kurt used to be my favorite but I'm kind of pissed off at him, based on end of s2 and rumors about s3. I actually resent myself for resenting him right now.

For you non-Australians or those who don't know me and Leo well - Tom is a 21 year old Australian comedian and breakfast radio host of Triple J, our "alternative" station. He is my favorite stand-up comedian aside from Simon Amstell, and his comedy consists of much the same stylings - very painful, self-deprecating personal experience that kind of make you want to cry even though you're laughing uncontrollably. Leo and I see nearly all of his Sydney gigs, including the free warm-up/workshopping trial shows he does at this pub in the Inner West every now and then. We're both nuts about him, but he is an absolutely huge presence for Leo - something about him speaks to her soul, he is her absolute number one human being on this planet. I'm also quite emotionally attached to him.

Basically, he's a gay vegetarian law-school drop out from a country town, and he has an amazing social conscious. I don't know if I've ever seen an entertainer so actively conscious, but he is always commentating various issues - usually gay, animal rights, but general humanitarian stuff - and it's not part of any of his jobs, he's just strongly opinionated and gets into fights/debates on Twitter all the time and shit like that. He is fiercely, fiercely intelligent, which comes across in his comedy as well, but it is at the point now where I am like: you. You are what I want the public to know about Gen Y. You are who I want to represent me. I want - if he wanted to, of course - I want him to go into full-on journalism or even politics himself.

The above video is something he filmed and posted today - addressing an opinion piece written in the Daily Telegraph (one of our papers, mildly better than the Mail) about an Australian senator who is having a baby with her partner - they're both women. The piece basically goes on to say about how it's become taboo to be supportive of a heteronormative family, touches on the London riots being a product of a fatherless society - and compares the damaged home lives of people like that to people raised by a gay couple - and oh, it just gets worse and worse.

Just watch what he does with it. This isn't "for" anything, it's just because he was pissed off, but is now spreading pretty fast around Australian social media.

This is who I want fighting in my corner.

(p.s. it is ridiculous - RIDICULOUS - that his douchebag ex is literally the face of Gen Y in Australia and is stupidly famous for it, and yet he is 1000x more worthy)

One of the greatest scenes ever put on television.

Utter, UTTER highlight of today - possibly no moment of the con will top this. I hope someone got the WHOLE thing on video [eta: ehhh slightly longer version below], like from the moment he came up to the mic (that's the fans-asking-questions mic) and was like 'can I just say something, this is my first ever comic con and I just wanted to say something' and they were being all 'questions at the end, sir' - I knew it was him. But this is most of it, and oh my GOD I actually wept.

This kid is one of my people, he's someone who right off the bat, from first seeing him, I have seen as very... real... like 'that's not a run of the mill celebrity' and oh jesus fuck this killed me. This person filmed the screen, but we were like, right, RIGHT near where he actually was and his fucking face, you guys, and his hyperventilating, I thought he was going to have a breakdown.

And this movie is going to rock. Hopefully the whole panel goes up online because him and Emma were also adorable - and Andrew got super intense and emotional again - during it... but this, oh, this. It didn't feel like a cheap gag or anything - I mean, it was clearly set up, but it was so very, very sincere. GARFIELD WHAT HAVE YOU DONE.

Are you guys aware that there is a boy currently living in my house? He is very very very cute and very very very funny but he does not understand the functionality of a bath mat - like, literally, he thought it was there to mop up the floor sometimes if you got it too wet - and I may kill him very dead.

I have a long draft post I gave up trying to finish tonight about many feelings, about my Dad being particularly difficult, my older brother who is visiting with his partner and kids and how they need to not leave/I may go to stay with them in Israel for a while, and about the Justin Bieber movie.

I will finish it later, I just need some advice.

24th - 30th June, the Glee London O2 arena dates. I will be getting accommodation in London for the week. I'm at a point where, while I don't LIKE spending that much money, I can afford it, and it will be worth it for the privacy and convenience. I usually stay in hostels, I have no issue with that usually but I know that week is going to probably be difficult and stressful for me and I will need to decompress.

The options I'm looking at right now are a small twin room in a little hotel in Bayswater, right near Whiteleys, or a double room at the Travelodge in Docklands, near the venue.

I can not fucking decide which would be better.

Travelodge - I like the anonymity, I can have people easily come and go from the room and no one will care. It's near the venue which means I can just go back there straight away after the shows if I want to, and it's near Jo's so I can go over to her house. It's also near the East End, Isle of Dogs and the old East India Docks, and I wanted to get to know this part of London. However I don't really know the area, and if I am not doing well, I do not just want to mope around the venue. Also, if I want to go out in London after the shows, I have no idea how to get from Camden to Docklands drunk at 2am.

Bayswater - I love, love, love West London, like, barely anywhere makes me happier, so the area itself would be a joy. However, the hotel may not be quality, it might be fine but it is a small privately run place which will probably be quite shabby and not in any way anonymous, the people would become familiar and notice me bringing people in and out. It wouldn't be TOO hard to get back on the Tube directly after the show, from O2, but not if I wanted to lurk the stage door or something, which I am as yet undecided on. It would be easy for me to get to from anywhere in Central London though, could do it in my sleep. But I am not sure the hotel itself will give me what I need. I could make it work, but I really do like anonymous faceless places a lot better.

More than anything I wish the dorms at the London School of Economics let out in June. Katrina and I stayed there at the High Holborn branch last August, after the Libertines shows (needed a private room for much the same reasons) and it was perfect. Also had the BEST free buffet breakfast of any place I've ever stayed. Seriously. But they're not available.

Anyway - the price for these two options is the same, so at the moment we're thinking about which would be a better LOCATION option. Depending on where/what state I end up in at nights, what I might need to do/where I might race to/what state I'll be in during the day... I SERIOUSLY don't know what to choose. Please advise. What would you do?

And I should add - anyone attending the Glee tour, or just hanging in London in general, I will be craving company though I may be in a bit of a messy state. I want sleep-overs - anyone who wants to crash in London, wherever I end up choosing - is free to share the room. I should have space for at least one other person (in the Bayswater room) or up to four in a Travelodge with their couch bed things. I won't make you to pay like half the room rate or anything, if you could chuck me a tenner per night that would be nice but I really just need support.

Oh, happy birthday, me? All I want is a TARDIS. Please provide. Oh, and Prince Zuko. Cool. Thanks.
